Campus Community Alerted to Upcoming Dialing Plan Change

Thu, 04/13/2017 - 11:53 -- wentod

The New York Public Service Commission has approved a new 838 area code which will be laid over the same geographical area currently served by the existing 518 area code.  As part of this change, effective Tuesday, August 1, callers will be required to dial the area code and the telephone number – for a total of ten digits -- for all calls placed within and between the 518 and 838 area codes.  Dialing only the seven digits will result in a re-order tone, and the call will be unsuccessful.

This new dialing system will affect Rensselaer phone users as follows:

VOIP Phone System

  • Those members of the campus community who use Rensselaer’s VOIP system – that is, they currently dial 9 + 1 + XXX-XXX-XXXX for long-distance calls – will continue to implement that same dialing pattern.
  • No long-distance authorization code will be required for either the 518 or the new 838 area code calls.
  • VOIP users can begin using the full ten-digit system right away in order to ease the transition before August 1.
  • Please note that any speed dials or call forwarding users may have configured on their Rensselaer phone must be updated to reflect the new ten-digit dialing rules.

PBX Phone System

  • Members of the campus community who use Rensselaer’s legacy PBX phone system and currently dial 1 + XXX-XXX-XXXX for long-distance calls will implement a dialing pattern of 9 + 518-XXX-XXXX for local calls.
  • This change will occur on August 1 for the legacy system, and unfortunately there is no transition period.  That is, prior to August 1, PBX phone users may still dial 9 + XXX-XXXX for local calls.  However, beginning on August 1, those users must dial 9 + 518-XXX-XXXX for local calls using the existing 518 area code, and dial 9 + 838-XXX-XXX to call local phone numbers with the new 838 area code.
  • PBX users must continue dialing 1 + XXX-XXX-XXXX to place long-distance calls.
  • No long-distance authorization code will be required for either the 518 or the new 838 area code calls.
  • Any call-forwarding that users may have configured on their Rensselaer phone must be updated to reflect the new ten-digit dialing rules on – but not prior to -- August 1.
  • Users should update the contact lists on their mobile phones to reflect ten-digit dialing for all local calls.

Calls to 911 will remain unchanged for all members of the Rensselaer community, as will the intra-campus four-digit dialing extensions.
