DotCIO Announces Changes to RCS UNIX Remote Access Service

Wed, 06/21/2017 - 14:35 -- wentod

DotCIO has historically offered a remote access service on a variety of platforms, including Sun Solaris, IBM AIX and Redhat Linux. Regrettably, due to a lack of maintainability on the Solaris and AIX platforms, DotCIO will be forced to terminate those remote services.  In addition, staff within the division will also be upgrading the Linux remote access service to RedHat 7.

The last day of availability for the Solaris, AIX and older Linux remote access services will be Friday, June 30, 2017.

Please note that this work will not affect network-level remote access via the campus VPN.

The services have been available at several hostnames, including:

  • rcs.rpi.edu
  • rcs-ibm.rpi.edu
  • rcs-sun.rpi.edu
  • rcs-linux.rpi.edu
  • rcs-ibm3.rpi.edu
  • rcs-ibm4.rpi.edu
  • rcs-sun3.rpi.edu
  • rcs-sun4.rpi.edu
  • rcs-linux1.rpi.edu
  • rcs-linux2.rpi.edu

After June 30, only the following hostnames will be active, and they will only provide access to the new Redhat 7 Linux:

  • rcs.rpi.edu
  • rcs-linux.rpi.edu
  • rcs-linux1.rpi.edu
  • rcs-linux2.rpi.edu
  • rcs-linux3.rpi.edu

Please note that the ssh keys for these machines will change, and users will receive a prompt to accept the new key.

If you have any questions or concerns about the termination of these remote access services, please contact the Help Desk  by phone at (518) 276-7777, or via e-mail.
