Need Hardware Repairs?

Follow these instructions to have your laptop repaired (on or off-campus).

Extending the warranty for T440s, T430s, and T430 laptops: Before your warranty expires, you can choose to purchase a warranty extension directly from Lenovo. Simply call 1-866-968-4465 and press the selection for "Sales"; this will connect you to a Lenovo representative who will assist you with your selection of coverage. Additional details are available on the Lenovo Care webpage.

Laptop replacement warranty information:  If Lenovo replaces your damaged laptop under the ThinkPad Protection coverage against accidental damage, the manufacturer's warranty will remain in place on the replacement laptop. However, it is important to note that the ThinkPad Protection coverage against accidental damage expires when you receive the replacement laptop and will not apply to the replacement machine.

Theft/Loss

Most laptops are stolen from unlocked -- however briefly -- residence hall rooms and campus buildings, so unfortunately a small number of laptops get stolen each year. Here are some important steps you should take if your laptop is stolen.

  • Contact the authorities immediately. If you're on campus at the time of the theft, contact Public Safety at 276-6656, or get in touch with the local police if you're off campus. You can obtain your laptop's serial number from the Laptop Status page in the Student Information System .
  • Contact your insurance company. Check to see if your laptop is covered under a homeowners's or renter's policy. The Haylor, Freyer and Coon insurance company offers a policy with a low deductible which covers computers and other electronic equipment; visit the Haylor, Freyer and Coon website and click on Personal Property Protection for more information and an on-line enrollment form. (Please note that the Haylor, Freyer, and Coon insurance company is not affiliated with Rensselaer.)
  • Contact Rensselaer Computer Repair. RCR, which is located on the lower level of the VCC, can arrange to provide you with a loaner machine.  You will need to provide a copy of the theft report to RCR.

Getting Help

When you first pick up your laptop computer, Mobile Computing staff will help you get it set up and configured for use with the Rensselaer network. With the exception of holidays, additional help is also available at the VCC Help Desk every day but Saturday.

There is also extensive on-line help about laptops and general computing instruction.
