Members of Rensselaer's Academic & Research Computing staff wish to remind all members of the campus community that Windows XP, which was launched on campus more than 12 years ago, has reached the total end of its support as of April 8. As a result, Microsoft no longer provides any fixes, updates or online technical assistance for the XP operating system.
Without Microsoft support, users can no longer receive security updates that protect their PCs from harmful viruses, spyware and other malicious software that can steal either research or personal data. As a result, any users who are still running Windows XP on their computers could become targets for hacking attacks with the consequence that compromised systems have their access to the campus network revoked.
The Academic & Research Computing staff strongly encourages all members of the campus community who are still using Windows XP to upgrade them as soon as possible to either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1; both operating systems are freely available for all campus members participating in Rensselaer's Microsoft Campus Agreement.
If you need assistance upgrading your XP system, please contact your system administrator.
