An important reminder regarding Microsoft’s announced end of support for Windows 7

Microsoft has announced that Windows 7, which was launched 10 years ago, will reach the end of its support as of January 14, 2020.  As a result, Microsoft will no longer provide any fixes, updates or online technical assistance for the Windows 7 operating system.

Without Microsoft support, systems will no longer receive security updates that protect from attack, harmful viruses, spyware and other malicious software. As a result, any systems still running Windows 7 could become targets for hacking attacks with the consequence that compromised systems have their access to the campus network revoked.

Members of the campus community who are still using Windows 7 should upgrade as soon as possible to Windows 10. This operating system is freely available for most campus community members.

If you have a lab instrument or other computer that cannot be upgraded or would like assistance in upgrading your system, please alert us by submitting a Support Request via the IT Services and Support Center at https://support.rpi.edu and we will reach out to discuss the best options for your circumstances.
