The Rensselaer Enterprise Spam Interdiction TEchnology (RESPITE) server scans all email addressed to @rpi.edu and @lists.rpi.edu for spam and viruses. Scanning includes comparing the connecting computer against lists of known spam sources, and against lists of computers believed compromised by so-called spambots. In addition, each messages is assigned a spam score based on message characteristics, and those scoring too high are rejected as spam.
Individual recipients, however, have full control over the strictness of the anti-spam setting and what actions should be taken when a message has been detected as probable spam. Individual recipients can also configure RESPITE to always accept (``whitelist''), or reject (``blacklist''), email from particular senders or domains, as well as add custom rules.
Any message failing the virus test is also rejected. The anti-virus settings cannot be customized.
