Students, Faculty and Staff with Windows 10 on personal computers not managed by RPI

Informational

Microsoft Windows 10 support ends on October 14th, 2025.  This means that as of this date, most Windows 10 systems will cease to be eligible for support including important security patches.  Without appropriate mitigation, Windows 10 systems and your data will be at significant risk.  Additionally, they will be non-compliant with multiple RPI security policies and may be denied access to the campus network to reduce risk and maintain a secure cybersecurity posture.

For members of our community with personal (non-RPI owned) Windows 10 devices we provide the following recommendations:

  • Upgrade
    • If your system meets the minimum requirements for Windows 11, you might have already received a notification about upgrading.  To check if it is eligible, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for Updates.
  • Replace
    • If your PC is not eligible or compatible with Windows 11, you may consider replacing the system.  For students, our Mobile Computing Program http://rpi.edu/laptops offers new devices throughout the year and they may be purchased by visiting https://sis.rpi.edu.
  • Purchase extended support

We strongly urge you not to continue to use a Windows 10 system without support after October 14th, regardless of if you plan to do so only off campus and only for personal use.  Significant risks to you individually and your data should not be ignored.
